Speaker Biographies
1. Guy Black
Guy was appointed Corporate Affairs Director of the Telegraph Media Group in 2005. Previously he was Press Secretary to the Rt Hon Michael Howard MP as Leader of the Opposition and Director of Communications for the Conservative Party. From 1996-2003
he was Director of the Press Complaints Commission and prior to that worked for Lowe Bell, Good Relations and Westminster Strategy. He was a member of Brentwood Borough Council and Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Energy from 1989 for four years.
2. Kai Boschmann ACIPR
Kai is Group Director of Corporate Affairs at DSG international, responsible for the Group's external and internal communications strategy in 27 countries, encompassing media relations, public affairs and community relations, among other areas. She has a seat on the Board of the British Retail Consortium and is Vice-Chairman of the European Retail Roundtable. She was recently voted one of the TOP 100 most influential PR people in Britain and has won a number of industry accolades.
3. Di Burton FCIPR
Di is Managing Director of Cicada Communications, an award winning consultancy working with clients like the Royal Entomological Society and the Institute of Directors. Cicada specialises in crisis and issues management, winning CIPR awards for work on the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak and for work with North Yorkshire Police. A CIPR Approved Trainer, Di is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. She is also a Consultant Fellow and holds an Honorary Fellowship at Trinity & All Saints, University of Leeds.
4. Leona Deakin
Leona is a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, member of the British Psychological Society and Director of consultancy Deakin Carmichael. She is also a partner to Cicada Communications with over ten years’ experience in business. She specialises in changing behaviour within the workplace and has helped organisations bring life to new cultures and values; worked with dysfunctional teams to create synergy; and developed individuals towards achieving their full potential.
5. Bastien Hibon
Over the past three years Bastien has played a dual role at Friends of the Earth – Creative Director and overall lead on communications for the climate change campaign ‘The Big Ask'. During this time they have won awards for design, produced 30 videos annually
and completely rebranded, all resulting in the Climate Change Bill in the Queen's Speech 2006. Born in Paris and brought up in Geneva, he studied communications and journalism in Brussels and London. His first job was in wartime Kosovo. After a spell at Medialink, he worked at Ogilvy PR on the Formula 1 team BAR Lucky Strike Racing.
6. Nicola Jackson ACIPR
With over 12 years' experience in communications, she has led Friends of the Earth's Communications and Media team for the past four years and driven change across the organisation. Alongside media strategy and media relations, Nicola has pushed Friends of the Earth to branch into new areas of PR. She spent five years as a television and radio journalist working for BBC London, Sky News, IRN, Anglia News, BBC Newsround and GMTV, before moving to Head of PR for Sargent Cancer Care. She also worked for Medialink, as Press Officer for the Further Education lobbying body, AoC.
7. Andrew Francis
Andrew is currently Internal Communications Manager for Gloucestershire County Council. He has worked there for 15 years, leading on publications and reprographics, as well as working in web and media. Andrew was part of the council's emergency response during the July floods, running staff communications whilst squatting in temporary offices as staff were evacuated from the council's HQ.
8. Howard Kosky MCIPR
Howard is Managing Director of markettiers4DC, the market leader in broadcast consultancy. He has constantly driven the broadcast remit forward, providing new and innovative ways to place content in areas that prove difficult to infiltrate using traditional PR methods. Converging media, podcasting, web-TV shows, research and advertorials all fall within Howard's area of expertise.
9. Heather Rabbatts CBE
Heather's latest role at Millwall FC may prove her biggest challenge yet. Heather has
an extremely varied background of achievement ranging from spells as a barrister, BBC Governor, youngest-ever Chief Executive of Merton and Lambeth Councils, Head of Education at Channel 4, a director of the Bank of England, Board Member of the UK Film Council, governor of the London School of Economics, where she was educated, trustee of the British Council and founder of her own internet company.
10. Simon Walker
Simon joined Reuters in January 2003 as Director of Corporate Communications
and in 2005 took charge of Marketing Communications and Brand, continuing
to oversee all internal and external communications. Before this, he was Communication Secretary at Buckingham Palace and previously Director of Communications at British Airways. He was a special advisor in the Prime Minister's Policy Unit at No 10 Downing Street from 1996 to 1997. Simon was previously a partner at Brunswick, and Director of European Public Affairs for Hill & Knowlton in Brussels. He was born in South Africa and initially worked as a journalist.
11. Lionel Zetter FCIPR
Currently president of the CIPR, Lionel has been a member for 20 years – the last six
as a Fellow. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the NUJ.
He has written and spoken widely on the subject of public affairs and given evidence
to the Committee on Standards in Public Life. Lionel has worked for several MPs
and been actively engaged in Conservative politics for many years. He is a former Associate Director of the Media Information Group and Company Secretary of PR+CI.
He was Managing Director of Parliamentary Monitoring Services (a political research and publishing company) and Political Wizard (an online campaigning and polling company), before selling both companies to Dods Parliamentary Communications.
