The Council is the governing body of the Institute. Ultimately all acts undertaken by the Institute's officers and staff are in the name of, and with the authority of, the Council. The Council concerns itself with overall strategy and co-ordination. Day to day responsibility is delegated to the Executive Board and Standing Committees.
Much of the business of the Institute is carried out in committees, commissions and groups consisting of Council members and co-optees. Elected Council members and those from national, regional and the established sectoral groups can expect to make their primary contribution to the work of the Institute in this way.
