Thought Leaders expert briefings 2013

2013's Thought Leaders series of speaking engagements were aimed at senior public relations professionals, providing an opportunity for discussion, debate and networking on topical subjects.

Wednesday 8 May 2013 - Tom Foremski: Can corporate media support serious journalism?

Speaker: Tom Foremski, Silicon Valley Watcher – at the intersection of technology and media.

Tom Foremski

Tom is the founder and editor of the popular and top-ranked news site, "Silicon Valley Watcher - reporting on the business of innovation at the intersection of technology and media." In May 2004, he became the first journalist to leave a major newspaper, the Financial Times, to make a living as a full-time journalist blogger. He has been reporting on Silicon Valley and the US tech industry since 1984. His current focus is on the convergence of media and technology--the fuel for a new era for Silicon Valley. Silicon Valley is becoming a Media Valley and every company is a media company.

As traditional media outlets shrink, corporations are stepping up their own media creation efforts and some are starting to produce serious journalism. During this 50-minute session, Tom explored the four important questions that are facing many communications departments today:

  • What's the role of corporate media?
  • Will the rise of corporate media serve society or hinder it?
  • Could corporate media become the new funding model for serious journalism?
  • Could corporate media win a Pulitzer?
