September 2011: Countdown to The Olympic

Speakers Darryl Siebel and Miriam Wilkens from the British Olympic Association gave us an insight into how you manage the influx of 30,000 journalists for one event, how you decide which 400 UK media get the "golden tickets" of entry to the Games, and how you make both the athletes and their friends and family aware of the power of the media and what can and cannot be said, especially in the age of social media. After describing just how much work goes into Team GB's preparation for the Games they then stunned the audience with the fact that they have a team of just four!

Damian Wild, Editor of the Estates Gazette, then explained the impact the Home Olympics has had on both the publication and the property industry more generally. Demonstrating how an issue or event can be used to launch new platforms, he showed the new Estates Gazette iPad app. This is currently based around the Olympics and major sporting events, but will be rolled out to more topics imminently. Damian also said the focus of the property and construction media will be on the legacy so their work is only just beginning…and there is plenty of opportunity for PROs to pitch their ideas.

May 2010: Campaigns in construction and property

Following a brief EGM, we looked at recent campaigns in the construction and property industry, getting a perspective on the combinations of Public Relations, Public Affairs and Media Management employed in planning, delivering and evaluating them. Presentations were delivered by:

  • Nick Edwards, Editor of Construction News on "Vote for Construction" - for more information, view the presentation
  • Sarah Richardson, Deputy Editor of Building Magazine on "Charter 284"
  • Lionel Zetter on the ICE's campaign for a National Infrastructure Investment Bank.

It was a great opportunity to learn more about the power of integrated campaigns in our industry, to swap notes, do some networking and relax with friends - we even had free drinks and refreshments!

April 2010, Digital realism - how to get the most out of the web in tough times

This joint CAPSIG/UBM digital media event at the Building Centre featured Phil Clark, digital director at UBM Built Environment (publishers of Building, BD and Property Week), for a presentation and group discussion on how the property and construction sectors can boost PR and communications through greater use of digital media:

  • Digital discipline - is less actually more?
  • How to focus on key online deliverables
  • Social media - protocol, privacy, tone and where to do it
  • Digital events - learning from live events
  • Metrics, metrics, metrics - without 'measurables' value is lost.
