The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has commented on today's ruling:
Following today's ruling, we are concerned about the potential costs to our members, to the UK PR industry and to business in general. Nevertheless, even if we disagree with them, the elements of clarity contained within today's ruling are welcome.
We believe that it is the next stage – where the copyright tribunal will examine the commercial arrangements proposed by the NLA – that will ultimately determine the cost to our members and the wider industry.
Throughout this process, we have maintained a dialogue with the NLA and have sought to provide advice and guidance to our members to minimise the cost to them of the licence fee arrangements for both print and online media. The NLA knows the areas of charging where we disagree with the current proposals and we will continue to work with them and at the copyright tribunal to strive for fairness in the charging and application of the licences.
