The Research and Development Unit was set up to meet obligations under the CIPR's Charter.
Research and development aims
To ensure a solid research foundation for future development of public relations practice in the United Kingdom and internationally
To do this, the Unit will make research findings and practice development work more easily accessible to CIPR members and others with an interest in public relations. As the Unit evolves, it will also carry out practice-relevant research in partnership with others, on its own initiative or in response to approaches from potential collaborators.
Practice-relevant research results are available from a number of sources:
- the CIPR's own members
- other professional research institutes such as the US-based Institute for Public Relations
- consultancies committed to carrying out research into topics of interest in public relations practice, such as Edelman and Bell Pottinger
- universities and clearing houses of research and case material.
The Unit will develop a full list of sources over the coming months, but examples of sources include:
Professional research institutes
- The Institute for Public Relations – A well established US-based research institute, committed to 'delivering the science beneath the art of public relations,' and a rich source of public relations research information.
Consultancies
Universities, clearing houses of research and case material
- Leeds Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University
- The John Madejski Centre for Reputation, Henley Business School
- University of Reading.

The section will also include brief research reports, of recent and upcoming research projects and meetings, with conclusions of interest to public relations practitioners.
A meeting to discuss priorities and a work programme for the Research and Development Unit is to be held on June 21 2011 at 4pm at CIPR's offices.
