This course is set at A-level standard and provides an introduction to PR as a career. Students will learn the basic theories of effective communication and develop writing and other essential skills and techniques.
What will I learn?
The course will examine the key terms, techniques and theories of public relations and look at the relationship between PR and marketing, advertising, promotions and publicity.
It will also define the field and scope of public relations and its relationship with marketing, advertising, publicity, propaganda etc. Broad introductions will be given to the specialist areas of PR and to in-house and consultancy working practices. Concepts such as corporate social responsibility, reputation management and working with publics will be considered.
The course will also examine the role of the professional PR practitioner, focusing on ethical issues, the CIPR code of practice and continuous professional development. The principles and practice of effective media relations; writing for the media, understanding a news story, use of visual imagery, and working with press and broadcast media will be covered as well.
How will I learn and be assessed?
Teaching comprises of 15 hours of lectures and workshops during which students will examine and discuss case-studies and current issues. Students are assessed in a three hour examination involving a report, a news release exercise and an essay.
Entry requirements
At least five GCSEs at grade C or above*. Plus, those whose first language is not English must be able to demonstrate proficiency in the language - spoken and written - to an International Language Testing System (IELTS) band score of 7.0 or above or equivalent.
* If you do not have the necessary GCSEs or GCEs you may still be accepted at the discretion of the CIPR on the basis of your professional experience (not necessarily in public relations). Please email Bernadettee@cipr.co.uk
Please Note: If you are currently studying full time or working whilst studying part time towards another course either within the CIPR or externally your application may not be accepted.

An alternative route - the CIPR Foundation Award Conversion Day
This option is open to students who have already attended the two day CIPR Introduction to PR Workshop. By completing this one day Conversion day (which includes an exam) you will gain this industry recognised qualification. The Conversion Day is held at the CIPR headquarters in Russell Square.
