Cross Cultural PR and Diversity - How the World of PR is Changing
Join two experts on diversity, international and cross-cultural PR for a look at how the world of PR is changing fast. Speakers Silvia Cambie and Bieneosa Ebite will discuss globalisation and diversity issues as they affect PR practitioners.
Silvia will cover how globalisation and social media are transforming the world of PR beyond recognition. We have never seen change of this magnitude in our sector before. New practices are being developed by emerging economies such as India and Brazil, and their ambitious multinationals. China and other parts of Asia lead the world's market for the adoption of social media. PR practitioners are expected to understand these new audiences and develop strategies able to reach them. The focus of our profession is shifting from content creation to relationship management and the study of cultures.
Silvia is a cross-cultural PR practitioner and a journalist. She was raised in Italy, educated in Austria, speaks five languages and spent her entire career working in an international environment. Her background includes reporting from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union for major British and German publications as well as managing communications and public affairs for Brussels-based international trade associations. Silvia is based in London where she runs Chanda Communications and advises clients on stakeholder relations, strategic PR and social media. She is a regular speaker at international conferences and serves on the boards of two organisations with global outreach.
Bienosa will make the business case for diversity in Public Relations. The UK's demographics have changed significantly over the past ten years, with massive implications for everybody working in communications. There is no longer a traditional view of what it means to be a British citizen, thereby rendering the one-size-fits-all approach to communication outdated. PR practitioners are entrusted to scan the environment and to keep abreast of attitudes and influencers of change that may affect the future. Diversity is the future and as such, we need to understand the business case for diversity if we are to keep the brands and organisations we represent in touch with existing and new audiences.
Bieneosa is the Managing Director of Bright Star Public Relations, a full service public relations consultancy with expertise in the food and drink industry, not-for-profit sector and communicating to multi-cultural audiences. Prior to setting up her consultancy, she worked for large brands including McDonald's Restaurants, where she was a Regional Communication Manager. Bieneosa has since worked with a number of clients across a range of sectors including leading law firm Thomas Eggar LLP, the National Lottery, the Home Office and the international restaurant chain Texas Chicken. Bieneosa is a founding member of the UK Black and Asian PR Networking Group, which aims to encourage diversity in the public relations industry.
Participants will be able to:
- Get an overview of the skills PR practitioners need to acquire in order to get up to speed in the new era of cultural interconnectedness
- Develop ideas that will help them draft cross-cultural PR strategies
- Get an overview of how the UK's demographic landscape is changing
- Understand the impact that diversity has on the UK's economy
- Understand the importance of diversity in the creative process
