Going for Gold; Rob Shorthouse, from 2014 to the SFA

Glasgow's success in bringing the Commonwealth Games 2014 to the city was the outcome of a robust bid backed by a strong communications strategy.

The approach to media handling and overall communications is widely praised as being integral to the win and CIPR Scotland is offering you the chance to meet Rob Shorthouse, former Head of PR & Media for the Bid.

In his role, Rob oversaw key media and stakeholder events and was the author of many of the speeches that sold Glasgow's bid.

Rob is now the Head of Communications at the Scottish Football Association, dealing with the varied issues facing one of Scotland's foremost sporting organisations.

Come and hear Rob tell you about how he developed and implemented the 2014 communications and how he is using this experience to shape the SFA's approach to PR. Rob will give tips on how to get your communications strategies off the marker and into a leading position that delivers winning results.

You can even ask Rob about both these roles during the Q&A session.

Tour of the BBC - Fully Booked

Wednesday 30 April. Time: 6.15pm for 6.30pm start. Venue: BBC Scotland, 40 Pacific Quay, Glasgow, G51 1BA.

This is an excellent opportunity to receive a guided tour of the new BBC Scotland building. BBC Scotland will provide members with the chance to view behind-the-scenes filming, be given a tour of the building and the opportunity to meet Head of News and Current Affairs, Atholl Duncan and members of his team.

CIPR Scotland – 'Newspapers - the final frontier?'

What future for the newspaper industry in Scotland?

Given declining sales and price wars, what does the future hold for the newspaper industry in Scotland ?

Veteran newspaper editor, John McGurk, gives a unique and thoughtful insight into the newspaper industry, what is in store for the industry in the future, and how PRs can respond to this declining media outlet in terms of getting their 'clients in print'.

John is the only journalist who has been editor of all three major newspapers published in Edinburgh: The Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News, and was also group managing editor of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph in London. He is now a busy media consultant, advising Indigo PR and lecturing on journalism at Napier University.

Help Students Learn 'How to Work the Room and find their way in to PR'

This is your chance to support Scotland's future graduates and have fun courtesy of CIPR Scotland!

In partnership with voicebusiness and Gusto, CIPR Scotland are hosting 'How to Work the Room, and your way in to PR', a training event to promote working in the PR industry and the support offered to CIPR student members in Scotland.

We invite you to the second phase, a champagne reception, which provides a platform for the students to try out their newly acquired networking skills.

We need you, the practitioners, to make the evening a success!  You never know, you could spot a potential employee!

As we loosen our belts in preparation for the seasonal wining and dining we expect to be doing in the weeks to come we thought it was only appropriate to invite a food writer and critic to help us kick off the festivities!

Former Scottish Journalist of the Year, Allan Brown, will be at the top table to share a light-hearted look at his career in the media as well as providing us with some hints and tips on achieving column inches.

Allan has been a columnist and features writer with the Scottish edition of The Sunday Times for more than a decade. Focusing mainly on interview and colour location profiles, he has, of course, also been the paper's restaurant critic since 2001. The 40-year-old published author is also an occasional contributor to BBC Scotland.

This event is aimed to kick off the festive season with some fun, so join us for some laughter and chat!

CIPR Scotland - Scottish PRide Awards Dinner 2007

Venue: Radisson SAS Hotel, Argyll Street, Glasgow

The CIPR Pride Awards are the premier event for PR practitioners working within the public relations or communications industry in Scotland.

The awards showcase good practice and celebrate the achieved success of individuals and companies within the industry.

Once again the Chartered Institute of Public Relations will host the PRide Awards this year in Glasgow.

The dinner will take place at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Glasgow on Friday 16 November 2007 and will be hosted by Forth FM Radio Presenter, Grant Stott.

As well as providing a fantastic opportunity to network with your industry colleagues the evening will also see awards presented to recognise the outstanding achievements of those companies and individuals who have made a significant contribution to the PR and communications industry in Scotland.

The evening will get underway with a pre dinner drinks reception at 7.00pm for 7.30pm and following dinner will be the presentation of the awards.

We anticipate that the formalities will conclude at 11.00pm and then the party will get underway with dancing into the wee small hours.

The dress code for this event is black tie.

Speaker meeting - Bob Wylie - Out of the frying pan

No sooner had Bob Wylie stepped in the door of Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) as Director of Communications, did he have a crisis on his hands.

The former BBC Scotland reporter hit the ground running when introduced into the world of public relations, with Glasgow Subway disputes over festive working hours and controversy over the new Nightrider service.
 
Since his leap from journalism to PR nearly a year ago, Bob has been leading the SPT communications team covering major disciplines of public affairs, press and media relations, marketing and internal communications.

At this event Bob will give an insight into how he dealt with his baptism of fire into the PR industry, shares his strategy to shape communications for SPT and talks about his experience working within Scottish media.

Crisis? What Crisis? - Fully Booked

Most organisations at some time require some measure of crisis management. From Avian Flu to Terrorism - The Scottish Executive works with local responders, dealing with crises on a national scale.

Want to know about the Scottish Executive approach to dealing with a crisis and learn some of the lessons from recent incidents?

Jason Wassell, Communications Strategist with the Civil Contingencies Unit, will describe the approach taken by the Scottish Executive. Jason will talk about some of the lessons from major incidents such as the recent Glasgow incident and 7/7 London bombings. He will talk about issues within communication planning including the development of the 24 hour media environment and growing influence of the 'citizen journalist'.

Joining him will be Neil Trotter who leads the Finance and Sustainable Growth communication team. As well as managing the team, he has responsibility for advising Ministers during major incidents across the portfolio, including major utilities such as nuclear energy and transport incidents.

Meet the Editor - Bruce Waddell, The Daily Record

Established over 100 years ago, The Daily Record was the first mass-circulation UK daily to print in colour and is Scotland's biggest daily newspaper.

CIPR Scotland is offering you the opportunity to meet The Daily Record’s Editor, Bruce Waddell. Bruce will talk about his career history in the media, the development of The Daily Record under his leadership and his views on the changing face of the media in Scotland.

Bruce will also provide vital tips for PR professionals on liaising with his staff and a Q&A session will give you the opportunity to find out more.

With 30 years' experience in journalism Bruce Waddell joined The Daily Record as Editor in 2003. He launched his career in print journalism in 1977 with Johnston Newspapers and has many years experience with daily rival, the Scottish Sun - the paper he left as Editor to take the helm at the Record.

Question Time - Scottish Elections in the Media

Communications in the Criminal Justice System

Venue: HMP Edinburgh, 33 Stenhouse Road, EDINBURGH, EH11 3LN

Probably one of the most challenging jobs in PR is handling media relations on behalf the Scottish Prison Service.

Chair of CIPR Scotland and head of communications for the SPS, Tom Fox, will be giving an insight into the day to day challenges of working for the criminal justice system in Scotland. Tom will be sharing his experiences of tackling issues which made headline news, including the introduction of Reliance, and how the SPS is responding to recent European Convention and Human Rights issues.

Tom Fox joined the SPS as head of communications in 2000 and throughout his career, which has spanned over 24 years, he has acquired an enviable wealth of experience within the industry dealing with headline issues including the Monklandsgate scandal in the mid-1990s and the recent Reliance problem.
