CIPR Cymru Wales Media Dinner 22 May 2003
News about the 2004 event...
What a do! A complete sell-out 220 people from PR, press, radio and TV.
And at least 40 of them were still in the bar of the Hilton at 4am.
John Aspery, President CIPR wrote: "Congratulations on an excellent
dinner party at the Hilton. You and your organising team are heartily to
be congratulated."
Right from the opening moments, the ‘Do Disturb’ tickets — designed to
look like hotel door hangers — caught the attention (designed and
sponsored by Atticus www.atticusmedia.net).
A champagne reception (sponsored by the Hilton Hotel,
www.cardiff.hilton.com) was accompanied by the Sabrina Turvey jazz
quartet (sabinaturvey@hotmail.com). The five course dinner with wine
that followed was first rate (first wines on tables were also part of
the Hilton’s kind support).
The raffle contributed to the enjoyment of all — and, more importantly,
enabled us to make a significant contribution to the Tŷ Hafan charity.
£1,172 will undoubtedly help support the continued operation of the
children’s hospice. Jackie Quantock, Business Communications Manager at
Legal & General won the first prize of a DAB Digital Radio. Many thanks
to all those who donated prizes.
Smooth booking arrangements through to the well timed running order on
the night were provided by experienced event management company
MrProducer led by Polly Wilson (www.mrproducer.co.uk).
Two awards were presented during the evening.
Kate Lewis (24) (pictured with flower in hair) of Llandaff, Cardiff was
awarded the CIPR Cymru Wales ‘Student of the Year’ award, receiving a
cheque for £150 for exceptional performance and commitment throughout
the course. The award was presented by Martin Long, managing director of
leading public relations company Golley Slater PR which sponsored the
award.
Amy Gooden (22) (pictured nearer to salver) from Salisbury received the
Tim Evans Memorial Business Award, an award initiated last year by the
CIPR Cymru Wales in memory of the late Tim Evans, former vice-chairman of
the CIPR Cymru Wales and previously PR director with the Wales-based
cancer charity, Tenovus.

Amy received a silver salver in recognition of outstanding achievement
in the business module of the course — it was presented by this year’s
Vice-Chair, Amanda Arter.
Speaking at the media dinner, Marc Evans, chair-elect of CIPR Cymru Wales
said: “The CIPR actively encourages its members and new entrants to the
profession to reach excellence by extensive training and continuous
professional development. We commend Cardiff University's postgraduate
public and media relations course as one of the most highly regarded in
Europe and I am particularly delighted that we are recognising the
achievements of these two young people as the best of the very best. I
wish them both every success in the future." Geoff Whiting (pictured on
stage) made a change from the usual ‘worthy’ after dinner speaker —
Geoff used newspaper cuttings from around the UK and pointed out to us
some of the more absurd headlines. Geoff (www.mirthcontrol.org.uk) is a
top stand up comedian who plays at venues such as The Comedy Store,
Jongleurs and on TV.
Geoff Whiting was sponsored by On Screen Productions (www.OnScreenProductions.co.uk)
who also provided the host for the evening, one of their producers
Richard Cobourne.
Very many thanks to everyone who came, sponsored and took part.
We would be glad to hear your comments (and those of your guests) for
improving next year’s Media Dinner. Any suggestions helpful.
We will be giving early notice of next year's Dinner to those who booked
tickets for this year — and will also offer priority access to
sponsorship and marketing for the Dinner and other CIPR Cymru Wales
events.
