November 2nd
Technology Expo & Debate
Venue: The Law Society, Chancery Lane, London WC2
Time: from 2pm DO YOU KNOW YOUR WIKIS FROM YOUR BLOGS?
We came, we saw, we speed-dated and debated. And we changed our minds.
But to begin at the beginning.
The CIPR’s Internal Communication Alliance hosted a seminar on how
technology today can help internal communication. To open the
proceedings Victoria Mellor, Melcrum’s chief executive who is also
director of the Strategic Communication Research Forum, highlighted some
key trends in internal communication and gave an overview of how new
technologies are shaping it.
We mostly knew what a blog was (an online diary). But RSS? That’s the
technology that puts the user in control of receiving syndicated data.
WIKIS? They are online clusters of information that can be accessed and
updated. And Podcasting? Simply online broadcasts that can be
downloaded.
It seems that some employees trust blogs more than messages from the CEO
and organisations would do well to have some guidelines or policy about
them. All these technologies, as Victoria Mellor said, are helping
transform the old command and control way of communicating to one where
engagement, influence and building a community are the criteria.
“New communication tools don’t make the old ideas obsolete,” she said,
“but they do force us to adapt.”
Then we moved on to speed-dating with some of the new tools.
Intranet tv was represented by BroadView and twoOfour. They create
multi-media broadcasts and tv quality briefings.
Ensuring you get the message Skinkers Desktop Alerts act as a high
priority communication channel straight to the desktop. They work
outside existing channels and over other applications like email and the
intranet, crucial in a crisis.
For those who don’t have access to an intranet InTouch has the solution:
phone in for a pre-recorded message and record your feedback on what
you’ve heard. Another feedback tool for meetings came from Crystal
Interactive, who can make it work over the internet.
One of the clever things about the seven step Synopsis on-line planning
tool is the interactive co-ordination calendar. It collates online plans
so the communicator can prioritise them and prevent clashes and
information overload.
Then we had fun at the debate with the Group Dynamics voting tool. The
proposition was technology is better than people at delivering internal
communication because it is more reliable, faster, more effective and
better value for money. At the start most of us used our Group Dynamics
electronic keypad to vote against the motion. Then Stuart Maister from
BroadView, Hamish Haynes from ICB Consulting, Alistair Dijksman from the
Office for National Statistics and Mathew Yeomans from Custom
Communication argued eloquently for their respective positions. They
were difficult to tell apart because all acknowledged the usefulness of
technology. And people.
“Employees want to have their say,” said Mathew Yeomans, “and technology
can make that happen.”
Then we voted again on the motion. Result? Victory for technology!

Engaging your people to drive change, strategy
and everyday business
John Smythe - former founder of Smythe Dorward Lambert - presented some
of the findings from research he conducted during his recent tenure as
'Organisational Fellow' with McKinsey and Company.
The research examines the ways in which organisations are engaging their
employees, and was based on interviews with people at all levels in 59
organisations in the UK, Europe, the US and beyond. He discovered that
more inclusive approaches are being widely experimented with - going far
beyond one-off interventions - and this will have profound implications
for communicators. But how?...
