The public relations team at Leeds Metropolitan University has pioneered an innovative and unique delivery of the CIPR Diploma and CIPR Certificate courses, combining traditional methods with the latest technology to enhance the learning experience of their students.
Students have access to a dedicated Wiki, an online learning environment where users can add, edit and change content, allowing them to communicate and discuss ideas with each other. Another original feature is the facility to download lectures as podcasts through the University’s intranet, enabling large amounts of information to be stored, reviewed and deconstructed more easily and efficiently than simple note-taking.
Included in the competitively priced course fees are an iPod Nano, to utilise course-related podcasts, and the definitive PR textbook, Exploring Public Relations, edited by Leeds Met lecturers Professor Ralph Tench and Liz Yeomans.
The benefits of studying these courses at Leeds Met also extends to the support, wealth of experience and guidance of its teachers, all of whom are either former PR practitioners, or are still practising PR. They appreciate that academics cannot operate in a vacuum and strive to maintain their close links with the industry. The competitive pitch competition is an excellent example of this, as students are given real scenarios and must formulate strategies and present their ideas to their client.
Describing the innovative programme, Course Leader Ryan Bowd, said: “By
embracing the technology that the PR industry advocates and uses we can
improve the delivery of our courses, directly adding value to our students.
This is reflected in the excellent feedback we’ve received from current
students.”
