In conversation with Stuart Nicolson, former Head of Communications for the First Minister of
Scotland Stuart Nicolson spent over a decade working at the heart of government as the First Minister’s
principal political spokesperson, from 2012 to 2023.
His tenure spanned era-defining moments in Scottish politics including the 2014 independence referendum, the 2016 Brexit referendum and the
Covid-19 pandemic.
In a fast-paced and varied role, Stuart advised the Scottish Government on communications
challenges and opportunities through these times and regularly delivered media briefings to the press
on behalf of the First Minister.
Before joining the Scottish Government, Stuart started his career as a journalist, initially writing for
local newspapers in Aberdeenshire and went on to become Scottish Political Editor for the Daily Mail.
