Communicating climate change - Are messages falling on deaf ears?

The ravages of extreme weather events are evident in different parts of the world, with threats and risks increasingly urgent. However, the messaging around climate crises seems to be placid, unchanging and ineffective. Is it time to look at how climate impact is communicated?  On January 27, 2026, at 15:00 GMT and 10:00 EST, CIPR International Committee member Klao Bell-Lewis Chart.PR will chair this discussion on language and its effect on policy and action entitled "Communicating climate change: Are messages falling on deaf ears?"

Dr Stacy-ann Robinson is Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences at Emory University.. Her work focuses on adaptation, adaptation finance, and responses to loss and damage in small island developing states. She has contributed to global climate policy engagement, including as a Contributing Author to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IIPCC) Sixth Assessment Report and now as Coordinating Lead Author of Chapter 5 (Responses to Losses and Damages) in the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report.

With expertise being grounded in award winning doctoral research, he has, through the Vanier and Ontario Trillium fund examined campaign and negotiation processes in relation to the landmark Paris Agreement on Climate Change, alongside communication processes in 17 indigenous and traditional villages across Belize, Fiji and India.
