As a member of the CIPR Inside Committee, I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to review several CIPR professional development courses. Most recently, I completed the CIPR Mastering AI in Internal Communication course - a subject that’s hard to ignore as AI continues to reshape our world. I want to share my experience to help you decide if this course could be useful for you.
AI in internal communication – how confident are you?
How confident are you in your understanding of AI? Are you keeping up with the changes, or do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the practical, legal, and ethical questions it raises? If you’re like me and want to feel more confident in your own use of AI - and in how your organisation approaches it - this course is well worth considering.
Recent research, including the latest Gallagher State of the Sector Report, makes it clear that while AI offers big opportunities for internal comms, many organisations are still cautious. There are plenty of tools and ideas out there, but a lack of clear guidance and training can hold people back. If you’re facing similar challenges, you’re not alone.
Mastering AI in Internal Communication – what to expect from the course
The course is a thorough guide for anyone working in internal communication who wants to understand and use AI more confidently. Catherine Arrow leads the course, and it’s very well produced, with a mix of videos, text, and even a ‘digital twin’ of Catherine herself. I must admit, watching the digital twin was a bit unsettling at first, but it certainly gets you thinking about the possibilities of AI from the start.
The course is broken down into manageable modules, so you can learn at your own pace and revisit any topics that interest you. The mix of videos, audio, and interactive content keeps things engaging and helps reinforce key points.
The course takes you from the basics - what AI is and why it matters - through to much more practical applications. You’ll explore a range of AI tools, learn how to use them, and see where they can add real value to your work. I especially enjoyed the section on deploying AI for personalisation in internal communication and the practical advice on choosing and using the most appropriate AI tools for the job in hand.
The course doesn’t avoid the difficult topics. It covers the legal and ethical challenges that come with using AI in internal communication. One area I think could be explored further is the risk of using Open AI platforms for internal communication. Once you input data into an open system, there’s always a chance it could become public. This is a real concern for me and, I suspect, for many others - especially as it’s one of the reasons organisations block AI platforms. The course does mention this, but I’d have liked to see more discussion.
Throughout the course, there’s a strong focus on the human side of communication. Whether you’re looking at employee engagement, supporting your organisation’s culture, or measuring the impact of your work, the message is clear - technology should support people, not replace them.
Overall, I found the course practical and thought-provoking. It’s a valuable resource if you want to build your knowledge, explore new tools, and feel more confident about using AI in internal communication. I highly recommend giving it a go. And for CIPR members, an added bonus is that you can tick off some of those CPD points early!
