National Apprenticeship Week 2025

By Natalie Geraghty, CIPR NW Vice-Chair

 7 February 2025

During National Apprenticeship Week (10-14 February), we spoke with Natalie Geraghty, the Director of Purple Tree Communications and Vice Chair of the North West CIPR Committee, about her experience in working with and then employing an apprentice to support her business.

“When I set up my business, my team consisted of just two people - my mum and me.  From the start, I knew that when we reached the point of hiring our first new team member would be an apprentice.  I wanted to offer an opportunity to someone who didn’t see university as the right path for them.

“In my previous role, I had a fantastic team and mentored several apprentices.  I’ve always found real satisfaction in supporting junior colleagues as they develop their skills and careers.

“In September 2024, I hired Lucy – her first full-time job.  That meant dedicating time not just to teaching her the role but also guiding her through the world of work.  I still do.  Of course, balancing that with the demands of securing new business and delivering for clients has its challenges.  But I see bringing Lucy on board as an investment – not  just in my business, but in the industry and the local economy.

“She’s doing a great job and I’m proud to have provided a young person with their first step into full-time employment.”
