Building your online presence

As a PR professional, your job will be to manage the reputation of your organisation or clients. This means it is imperative that you demonstrate the ability to manage your own reputation effectively.

Ensure your LinkedIn account is up-to-date and represents you well. Your profile should reflect your CV not forgetting to highlight voluntary work you may do or digital badges you may hold. Engaging and contributing your own content will help raise your profile on LinkedIn in with recruiters.

Use LinkedIn for more than simply adding contacts. Having a well thought out, grammatically correct point of view and sharing these on the themes and issues that are important to you will show potential recruiters, the breadth of your skills and capabilities.

When it comes to applying for jobs, you want your social media presence to convey professionalism and showcase the skills that are important to your role. Ensure your online profiles are free of poor grammar and spelling mistakes. Obviously there is more than just LinkedIn, Facebook, and X. Some key social media sites include Mastodon, Post, Bluesky, Threads and Substack.
