Why did I choose to do a degree in PR?
I have always been interested in communications and how good or bad publicity can affect a person or company. I love how the public relations industry is so wide and there are so many different sectors that I can explore. I believe that by completing a course in public relations I will gain knowledge and understanding that will allow me to start a successful career in such an exciting and growing industry.
What do I do day-in-day-out at university?
As public relations is the main focus of my degree I have two modules surrounding that, and one on media (public relations is still incorporated into the learning). All aspects of public relations from crisis management to investigation and research skills have been covered in my degree, as it aims to prepare us for realistic circumstances that we may be faced with in the workplace. In my final year I will be working part-time in the industry, compiling a portfolio which will be in place of doing a dissertation. I believe that this opportunity is one that will prepare me for the future and allow me to get invaluable experience.
What have I learned from my degree?
I have learnt so much from my degree; I can now write press releases to a high standard, I believe I will be prepared if any issues or crisis' arise for my clients and I believe I can effectively communicate with my chosen audience. I have learnt the importance of practising good public relations, and the consequences that may come if you do not do this appropriately and ethically.
What have I gained from being a student member of the CIPR?
By being a student member of the CIPR I have had access to vital pieces of advice, contacts and workshops that I would not have been available to me otherwise. I think that by making a commitment to the CIPR it shows prospective employers and public relations professionals how serious I am about working in this industry.
What do I want to do next?
When I graduate I plan to start my career in public relations straight away. I believe this will allow me to gain more knowledge and understanding of PR by practising it first-hand. In terms of further education and doing a Masters in PR I believe that by working in the industry for a few years I will have an advantage if I choose to extend my degree.
What advice do I have for someone considering a career in PR?
Try to get as much experience as possible, and try out as many different areas of public relations so you are confident which sector you want to go in to. I recommend trying both in house PR and agency PR as the decision of which you want to go in to when you graduate is one of the most important.
