We are delighted that we will be joined by guest speaker – Steve Hopkins, Marketing Services and Tourism Manager for the City & County of Swansea, who will discuss 'The Swansea Story- How Premier League PR and Marketing Hit the Back of the Net'.
The promotion of the local football team, Swansea City, to the Premier League handed Swansea a once-in-a-lifetime shot at marketing the area. With Swansea City being given little hope by the media of maintaining their top flight status beyond a solitary season, the world spotlight- the Premier League is broadcast in 212 territories with a television audience of 4.7bn- would be on the region for potentially just ten months.
The Council's tourism arm, Visit Swansea Bay, Mumbles & Gower, embarked on an integrated PR and marketing campaign to showcase the area to the new audiences of Premier League football fans and the wider public. From Peter Crouch-inspired infographics to London Underground adverts, beaming beautiful beaches to bleary-eyed commuters, the campaign has been as inspired and innovative as the football team's approach on the pitch (they stayed up and in some style), picking up CIPR awards and contributing to a £58m boost for the Welsh economy in the first season alone.
Fresh from the final of the Capital One Cup Final on Saturday February 24 – fingers crossed for a Swansea win(!) – Steve will address the audience on the difference a Premier League Club has made to the image of the city locally, nationally and worldwide and how just a couple of seasons has helped boosted its fortunes.
Following the AGM, drinks and light bites will be served.
Non-CIPR members are welcome, but have no voting rights.
