We have played a prominent role as the leading professional body for public relations since we were founded in 1948 as the Institute of Public Relations (IPR). Chartered status was finally granted by the Privy Council in 2005 and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) was created.

Our governance structure is set out in our royal charter. Our Board of Directors has collective responsibility for running the CIPR and is led by our Independent Chair. The Board is advised by our Council, which is led by our President. We also have five  Standing Committees.
